A glimpse into the highly anticipated movies of 2025 |
The year 2024 is already halfway through, and all the major Hollywood studios and distributors are eagerly filling up their theatrical slates for the near future. While moviegoers can still look forward to incoming blockbusters like "Deadpool & Wolverine," "Twisters," "Alien: Romulus," "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice," "Joker: Folie à Deux," "Sonic the Hedgehog 3," "Gladiator 2," and "Wicked Part 1" in 2024, what's coming in 2025 and even 2026 is just as exciting. Universal, Paramount, Warner Bros., Sony, Disney, Lionsgate, Neon, A24, and more are announcing new movie release dates every week. Thus, there's no better time to compile an up-to-date list of major film release dates confirmed for the years 2025, 2026, and beyond.
Marvel Studios' Future Releases
Fans of comic book movies have a lot to look forward to in the next few years. After taking some time to recuperate in 2024, Marvel Studios is coming back in full swing in 2025 with films like "Captain America: Brave New World," "Thunderbolts," and "Blade." In addition to these thrilling new titles, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) will debut its highly anticipated take on "The Fantastic Four" on July 25, 2025. Audiences will be reintroduced to Marvel’s first family — Reed Richards (Pedro Pascal), Sue Storm (Vanessa Kirby), Johnny Storm (Joseph Quinn), and Ben Grimm (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) — in a retro-themed adventure directed by Matt Shakman (WandaVision). Following this, the MCU will head into "Avengers: The Kang Dynasty" and "Avengers: Secret Wars" in 2026 and 2027, respectively.
DC Studios' Upcoming Slate
On the side of DC/Warner Bros., James Gunn and Peter Safran will launch chapter one of the new DCU with "Superman" on July 11, 2025. After James Gunn’s "Superman," the DCU will continue in 2026 with "Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow" on June 26, 2026. Next up will be the long-awaited release of "The Batman Part II" (which is now considered an “Elseworlds” story) on October 2, 2026. Fans will be delighted to see writer-director Matt Reeves and star Robert Pattinson finally reunite to bring their sequel to life. “DCU Chapter One: Gods and Monsters” also includes "The Authority," "Swamp Thing," and "Batman: The Brave and the Bold," but those films have yet to receive official release dates.
Animation: The Next Big Releases
The years 2025 and 2026 are starting to get stacked with huge names in animation. Though still undated, Sony Pictures Animation’s mega sequel, "Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse," is expected to premiere in 2025. Meanwhile, Pixar has a brand new original film titled "Elio" slated for June 13, 2025, and "Toy Story 5" on June 19, 2026. Walt Disney Animation Studios has even more sequels scheduled, specifically "Zootopia 2" and "Frozen 3," which are dated one year apart on November 26, 2025, and November 25, 2026, respectively. Illumination has a sequel to "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" set to release on April 3, 2026.
DreamWorks, Paramount, and Warner Bros. Animation
DreamWorks Animation has "Dog Man," based on the popular children’s comics of the same name, slated for January 31, 2025, and "The Bad Guys 2" on August 1, 2025. Warner Bros. Animation is kicking off a new animated Dr. Seuss universe with "The Cat in the Hat," starring hit comedian Bill Hader as the titular feline, on March 6, 2026. Paramount Animation has an impressive lineup with "The Spongebob Movie: Search for SquarePants" set for December 19, 2025, and a sequel to "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem" on October 9, 2026. Paramount’s real cherry on top is "Aang: The Last Airbender," a feature animated film continuation of the beloved Nickelodeon series hitting theaters on January 20, 2026.
Horror: New and Returning Frights
Huge sequels like "The Black Phone 2," "M3GAN 2.0," "Saw XI," "28 Years Later," and the next "Five Nights at Freddy’s" film are all premiering in theaters in 2025. Additionally, director Ryan Coogler‘s next movie, slated for March 7, 2025, is said to be an original vampire flick with star Michael B. Jordan. Moviegoers should also look out for "Weapons," the next original story from "Barbarian" director Zach Cregger, set for January 16, 2026. New adaptations include Leigh Whannell’s "Wolfman" (January 17, 2025) and Maggie Gyllenhaal’s "The Bride" (October 3, 2025). Guillermo del Toro’s "Frankenstein" for Netflix, starring Oscar Isaac, Jacob Elordi, and Mia Goth, is predicted to release in 2025 as well.
Live-Action Remakes and Blockbusters
2025 will bring live-action film remakes of Disney’s "Snow White" and DreamWorks’ "How to Train Your Dragon." The live-action "Minecraft" movie is expected to set a new bar for video game adaptations when it hits theaters on April 4, 2025. The 2025 summer movie season is packed with heavy hitters like "Mission: Impossible 8," "John Wick Presents: Ballerina," and "Jurassic World 4" going up against the usual superhero fare at the box office. The "Star Wars" franchise is making a cinematic comeback with director Jon Favreau’s "The Mandalorian & Grogu" premiering on May 22, 2026.
Star Wars and Other Anticipated Releases
Lucasfilm has its flag planted for two other mystery "Star Wars" movies on December 18, 2026, and December 17, 2027. One of these projects is expected to be a follow-up to the Sequel Trilogy with Daisy Ridley returning as Rey Skywalker. For those curious about James Cameron’s next three "Avatar" sequels, or the inevitable release of "Fast and Furious 11," or even the next films from notable filmmakers like Jordan Peele, Paul Thomas Anderson, Bong Joon-ho, Damien Chazelle, Ari Aster, and Chad Stahelski, here is the full guide.
